Social connections are important at all levels of human life. Nowadays we are connected in so many ways; language, culture, family, friends and local community. Technological developments have introduced a new layer of connectivity; the internet, social media, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and of course mobile smartphones to name but a few.
In an effort to make Greater Manchester the best place to live with dementia; cafes, restaurants, bars, medical and health services, sports, leisure, housing, community groups, private businesses and transport services have been connected together via a virtual community. This virtual community has assisted many living with dementia to be more independent, allowing loved ones a level of confidence in the support of the wider community.
The Salford Way app for mobile smartphones and tablets is designed to connect people living with dementia, their cares, family and friends to their local community amenities. The app offers businesses and services a free information page which includes; opening times, contact details and an interactive map which provides directions to the business location.
This new and rapidly developing virtual community connects people living with dementia to services whose staff have undertaken dementia friend’s sessions; improving staff awareness and giving staff the ability to provide the appropriate level of assistance.
In Greater Manchester the Dementia Action Alliance actively encourages all strata’s of society to engage in the dementia challenge. This work is being joined up further by Dementia United’s ambition to improve the lived experience and quality of services across Greater Manchester, making us all better connected in the challenge against dementia.
